Life Changing Tool
I had to build 8 cabinets in 2 weeks. Being retired and no longer having my cabinet shop, my sliding table saw and being older, cutting up 3/4" prefinished birch plywood is a challenge. Enter the Makita Track Saw... piece of cake! Perfect cuts every time. If your building furniture and cabinets and working alone, you need this saw.

Great Saw, Guide Rails not flat or square!
The saw itself is absolutely wonderful. I've used the Festool tracksaw for years and I really don't see a difference in the end result. The included blade leaves a smooth flat finish with no tearout and no teeth marks. The soft-start mimics the Festool almost exactly. The electric brake stops the saw very quickly. The adjustments to snug the saw to the track are great and leave no play with a smooth slide. All other adjustments feel secure and solid. I haven't used the dust collection so I can't speak to that.

Now for the guide rails/tracks. I ordered an extra 55" guide rail, that one was flat and straight but the ends weren't square and looked like they were cut with a jig saw. The track that came with the saw was straight but the middle would stand off a flat work piece 2 1/2". That's A LOT of bend to that track, although the weight of the saw was enough to push it back down to the work piece with ease. a simple jig, a few clamps and a day later it's pretty flat. The short ends on this piece were also not square and had rough cuts on them.

To fix this I put a general purpose 7 1/4" blade in my 10" SCMS (miter saw) to slow the speed and clamped the track to the saw table. With a slow cut and a little WD40 I now have two square ends to line up the tacks. Mind you my SCMS is calibrated to within .002" so this worked for me. It would have cost me $95 to have the ends machined to a perfect 90 deg. I couldn't justify this cost.

For the difference in price between the Festool and the Makita Guide Rails I'd say it was worth my time to fix the tracks. I can't say that I understand why Makita dropped the ball on QC of the Guide Rails, as the only have one purpose, TO MAKE A STRAIGHT CUT! The profile of the short ends line up perfectly on my two pieces, guess I got lucky. Also the connector bars (to attach the two tracks) are sold individually. You will need two of these if you want a secure attachment. All in all I'm happy with this saw and recommend it to anyone looking not to spend the Festool or DeWalt price tag. Other than the guide rails needing a little tune up I can't see why anyone would need to spend more on a track saw other than bragging rights.

Works as expected with a positive surprise.
I've been using this to break down plywood. The saw works well. Very smooth start, smooth cuts, very good dust collection when connected to a shop vac. I initially clamped the track to the plywood, but discovered that this is not always necessary. The track is heavy enough, particularly with the saw resting on it, that the anti-slick strips on the back very effectively keep it in place.

Will this make a straight enough cut to join two boards together without the use of a jointer. I am looking for a great seam
Travis on Mar 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I would say not recommended but possible in theory. I love this saw but use it primarily for sheet goods. The cut is incredibly clean and straight but there are other factors to consider with your application. First your boards need to be wide enough for the guide to sit properly. Secondly lumber is not only crowned but usually cupped as well which will affect the performance of the guide depending on the severity. Your boards would need to be fully dressed clean with a planer to have a chance at getting a good cut. I have a jointer and planer so the track saw is not my option to accomplish this task so I have never tried

A shopper on Nov 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No, I haven't, but at 15A, I would assume it's capable of if with a sharp blade and a little patients. I get a smoother cut with it than my table saw.

Once you have made a miter cut, does this affect the splinter guard when you go back and make a 90 degree cut? In other words will the splinter guard still make splinter free flush cuts or will the splinter guard be cut at an angle making it not sit flat against the wood?
